OK, I freely admit, this is going to sound, shall we say … quirky? The other night I was struggling to sleep. First it was cold then it was hot then there was rain and then … at about 2:00 am… in my frustration … thinking I was going to wake up tired and I didn’t want to go to work … I grumpily turned over my pillow and …. ahhhh, it felt so cool and so nice. It was bliss. I’m pretty sure I drifted to sleep with a small grin on my face and an odd thought – “I can’t wait to wake up and turn my pillow again”. YES, I know! You read the part above where “I freely admit”, right?
As if it wasn’t quirky enough, the pillow flip has been stuck in my head since then so I started wondering what other, seemingly small and inconsequential, moments are taken for granted. I instantly thought of the smell of lilacs in the spring, the slap of cold lake water on my face the first dive on a hot summer day, my sisters trying to get into the blooming cherry tree for the photo op, puppy breath, a child grabbing your pinky finger when they’re first starting to walk, “Sweet Home Alabama” blaring on the car radio while driving down the highway with the windows open, smores, walking barefoot on the grass, etc.
And thus the birth of my quest (and challenge, if you choose to accept it) for this week is: Pay attention, recognize and acknowledge the little opportunities for bliss we come across daily.
