Yes it does! Was I somewhat spoiled? Absolutely! Did my sisters have to take care of me and be responsible for me sometimes (or most of the time)? Sure! Did I have a huge advantage because of this? You have no idea. I do not think being the baby is negative at all. I can tell you that as I was growing up, there were many times that I said to Sylvia “You aint the boss of me!” and many times I was irritated by her telling me what to do or trying to be in charge of me and many times she was to blame for what she did not do. And with Debbie, it is a whole different story. She got to hear all about what she did or didn’t do as my older sister when we became good friends later. I really let her have it.
Bottom line is that my sisters throughout their lives have taken turns somewhat being responsible for me. They have always stepped up and been there for me, protecting me and guiding me. All of these efforts by them have shaped who I am today. I have to laugh now when I look back at my irritation by their concern for me. Being the older sibling carries a great deal of responsibility and they both have gladly accepted that responsibility even though it was not easy and definitely not fun at times.
It is amazing how this love, care and guidance can attribute to your success in life!
So to all you older siblings out there: when someone says to you “So you’re the oldest, that explains everything!” You need to reply: “Thank you, I appreciate you acknowledging that about me.”
And to both my sisters, thank you for being the best big sisters ever! And to my oldest son, Tyler: I am proud of you! You have been a great big brother and continue to be!
And to Chelsey: a different blog sometime in the near future will address you, Stacey, and Amy, as to the dynamics involved in being the only girl in the family!
